Killearn Acres
History:

You will hear Killearn Acres (located in northeast Tallahassee) referred to as the place with the horse names.  Many streets are named after Kentucky Derby winners from Day Star to Majestic Prince.  My first home in Tallahassee was on Seattle Slew Court.  Streets that travel through are called Trails and the cul-de-sacs are called Court and most of the neighborhood is off Whirlaway Trail.  There are two parks in the subdivision, Man-O-War and Pimlico.  The first homes were built in the 1970s and may be a bit small for today’s taste, and some have been added onto and remodeled. Neighborhood is quiet and full of wildlife.

Killearn Estates
History:

Killearn Estates was the first planned community in Tallahassee with underground utilities and that is awesome for residents in two ways:  1. It preserves the beauty of the land, and 2. Residents are less likely to lose power due to wind storms knocking down power lines. Started more than 50 years ago, there are approximately 12,000 residents, and lots of outdoor living opportunities.  The Killearn Estates area is approximately 4,000 acres and includes churches, shops, services, and an independent/assisted living facility. There are 11 parks and activities run the gamut – golfing, hiking, bike riding, kayaking, jogging, and so much more.  The near 3,800 homes include townhomes, condos, and single-family homes.  Solid community, and we sometimes hear that buyers do not want to live in an older homes.  These older homes have often been remodeled and updated and have yards bigger than any new construction going on now.

Southwood
History:

Southwood was originally a large cotton plantation over 5,000 acres located south and east of the state capital at the center of Tallahassee.  Plantation owner George T. Ward inherited much of the land we know call Southwood from his father George W. Ward.  In 1844, George Ward married Sarah Jane Chaires.  You might recognize that name, many small towns around the area are named for prominent families.  Sarah Jane would also inherit land that would become part of Southwood.  The original house built in 1865 was destroyed by fire.
